The upcoming AVANT is not your grandparents’ El Bizcocho. After a $2.5 million face-lift, the Rancho Bernardo Inn stalwart will reopen this winter as a rustic dining room featuring a fire-lit patio, leather banquette-lined lounges and floor-to-ceiling windows. Chef Nic Bour’s menu will be French by way of Cal-Med. Terrines will pair with artisanal mustards pumped from custom taps (Bour is a moutarde fanatic), along with sharable plates like crispy cod cheese, goat’s cheese milk ricotta gnocchi and housemade charcuterie for social nibbling, that never fit in the old, starchy dining room.
