Following a $2.5 million investment, the Rancho Bernardo Inn has opened its new dining concept called AVANT. Dishes take inspiration from California’s thriving wine country and include dungeness crab and pear salad, Sonoma duck breast and strip steak served with truffle cheese bread pudding. The 2,500-square-foot restaurant offers several private dining options, including a 1,009-square-foot room overlooking the property’s golf courses and a 12-seat chef’s table in the kitchen. Also available are chef-led cooking demonstrations, wine tastings in the wine room and a charcuterie- and cheese-tasting class.

The focus was somewhat different for a US$3 million renovation at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. The hotel replaced its decades-old El Bizcocho restaurant with Avant, which also offers Avant Kitchen, a private demonstration kitchen designed to host small functions. Costa Mesa, California-based Hatch Design transformed a private dining room into the 640-sq-ft Avant Kitchen, which F&B Director Bernard Philippe says is used several times a week for business dinners and various social functions.

“Groups that utilize the space are looking for a hands-on approach with our culinary team,” Philippe explains. “Avant Kitchen is similar to a performance kitchen in its bones – stovetop, hoods, oven, dining table, etc. It is unique in that it was designed to be residential in style. Guests do not feel intimidated in the kitchen – it’s more of a learning laboratory than a commercial kitchen.”

The AAA Four-Diamond resort’s 45,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space can accommodate groups up to 1,000, and includes 22 meeting rooms. Rancho Bernardo Inn’s challenging 18-hole championship golf course, which has hosted both a PGA and LPGA event, was renovated last year and is just steps from the resort’s lobby.

A major $28 million renovation of the resort was completed in 2007, which included the renovation of guest rooms; the addition of the Aragon Ballroom; and the building of The Spa, which features state-of-the-art treatment rooms, outdoor treatment casitas, water features, and lounges. In addition, the Southern California resort offers three swimming pools, 12 picturesque fountains, and multiple dining options.

Along with its Membership in ALHI’s worldwide portfolio and the “ALHI Golf Collection,” the resort also joined the “ALHI Historic Collection” specialty segment, consisting of ALHI’s legendary Member hotels and resorts with more than 50 years of heritage.
