Journal Sentinel Online – Plenty of sun and fun to go around in San Diego

Journal Sentinel Online – Plenty of sun and fun to go around in San Diego

Holly Eklund, a native of Waukesha and a concierge at the swank Rancho Bernardo Inn, said she has no end of suggestions of things that visiting families can do.

“San Diego is a fabulous place for families, especially in the winter if you are coming from someplace cold like Wisconsin. The weather here is great all year round.

“You can go to the beach here in February, when it might be well below zero back home. Or you can spend time here at our resort, play golf or visit our spa while your youngsters enjoy our ‘Kids Rule’ program.”

Eklund, who moved to San Diego in 1990, said visitors who want to get a big-picture view of San Diego should consider taking an Old Town Trolley sightseeing tour, which stops at many interesting spots in and around the city.

“What’s really nice about this tour is that you can hop off and hop back on at any of the stops,” she said. “And it’s super for families — or anyone else for that matter — because you can see so much without having to use your car. It’s educational, too.”

She said the trolley tour, which begins on Twiggs St. in Old Town, goes over the Coronado Bridge, which is arched so much it’s like riding a roller coaster. From up there you can see Navy ships, dolphins and, from December through April, migrating whales. Other stops on the tour include Little Italy, the historic Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, Chinatown, Balboa Park and the Petco baseball park, home to the San Diego Padres.

Pomerado News – Inn builds life-sized gingerbread house

Sweet dream: Inn builds life-sized gingerbread house
By Elizabeth Marie Himchak

If looking for inspiration on how to decorate a small gingerbread house, the Rancho Bernardo Inn has a life-size version that might spark some sweet ideas.

The 9-foot high, 12-foot wide house can be viewed for free in the RB Inn’s lobby, 17550 Bernardo Oaks Drive. It will remain on display through the New Year.

Pastry Chef Margaret Carvallo has led the four-member team for the past four of the five years the inn has had the house as part of its annual holiday decorations. When she joined its staff, Carvallo said the house was one of the first things she was told about.

“I had never made a life-size gingerbread house before,” Carvallo said of her 12 years in the baking industry. The lifelong county resident graduated from the California Culinary Academy.

“I really like that it brings the team together,” she said. “It really does feel like Christmas.”

Apple Cider Sugar Scrub
Apple Cider Vinegar is known to have many health benefits.  Whether taken orally or applied topically it helps to promote a natural, healthy glow within your skin, helps get rid of age spots and is a natural acne fighter.  The gentle acids in the Apple Cider break down old skin cells and allow healthy skin cells to shine through.  Helps restore your skins natural PH (good-bye dry, itchy skin) and helps improve circulation and blood flow.

Ginger Wrap and Massage
When applied topically ginger increases circulation in the skin and can help alleviate joint stiffness.  Ginger has natural warming properties when ingested or applied topically.

Pumpkin Peel Hand Treatment
Full of beta carotene and the anti-aging Vitamin A.  The enzymes found in pumpkin naturally break old skin cells, encouraging new cell turnover.  This helps to nourish dry, dehydrated skin.
